I started thinking today of how right about now many people drop the new years resolutions. They gave it a good shot but it just wasn’t something they wanted to stick with. I have done that on many occasion and most of my attempts were attempts to lose weight. Last year I was actually successful at losing weight and keeping it off for most of the year. But now I’m in 2010, The Year Of The Hobo, and I find that I have not been focusing on that goal any more. I wonder why some things we commit to do become an actual easy habit for us to follow and others are uphill battles. About three years ago I jumped on a FBCW church van and went down to a ministry I had never been part of. This was Church On The Street, www.churchonthestreetwoodstock.com. I was going with my coteacher and our 9th grade class. I thought this trip was for them but it turned out that God had other plans. I stepped off the bus and into the middle of a passion. I knew within 10 minutes of being at the safe house that this was something I wanted to be part of every week.
Now here is what I was thinking. Which is easier, not eating until I’m stuffed, or planning for and going to and giving up 3 hours every Thursday night to be with a bunch of people who may not come across as the most pleasant people I have meant. I didn;t even throw into the comparison the weather hazzards we face at times and the concern that maybe someone will approach me with liquor or drugs in their system. I think the answer logically would be the reduction in my eating. Problem is, I don’t have a passion to stop eating. It does make meel feel good and I enjoy the occasional compliment when I have dropped some weight, but still, there is no passion in me to make this happen. God has given me a passion to serve in this wonderful ministry and the great news is that He has so many opportunities He shows us daily to serve that it should not be hard for every believer to find a ministry opportunity to fuel our passion. Here’s the challenge….What fuels your passion? What is it that you have no trouble doing consistantly. Is it watching TV, I’ve been guilty; video games, facebook, work, food, lust, friends,a girl friend or boyfriend, your car, your looks, your clothes??? HOBO5050 issues this challenge. Ask God to reveal to you a ministry that you can be part of. Be obedient as opportunities present themselves and see where HE will lead you. Its an amazing feeling when God makes something important to Him important to you….but you need to be open….you need to ask….you need to respond…..take the challenge. Now as for me, I’m heading off to the fridge to see what looks good.

We worked hard at choosing a name that would best fit our goals here at HOBO5050….We did not want to choose a name that would mislead our visitors in any way. We also did not want to choose a title that would be an insult to the very people we are working to support. When we came across the word HOBO, Wes and I learned that this word actually means “a man with no roof over his head who wants to work”. We both felt that this described the people we really want to help. Those who find themselves on the street, but who have not given up the will or desire to work. From the time I have spent visiting with the homeless I have found there are different types of homeless. And I have also seen that the sterio type of a homeless person is wrong on many occasions. Yes there are those on the street that continue to choose to make decisons for their lives that in no way will impact them getting off the streets. They may tell you they want off but their actions and the decisions they continue to make show differently. But what I have learned is there is a large group of homeless who want to get back into the game. They are not on drugs or alchohol or they are working through programs to get them off of these very tough addictions. They are daily looking for work and they take whatever comes their way. They don’t want the hand outs, they want a job offer. They try to stay clean and presentable and they work very hard on affective and professional communication. These are the people we/you will help. They don;t want a hand out they want a hand up. They just want an opportunity again. I used to be one who thought and said, they made their bed now let them sleep in it. Since I have been involved in homeless ministry I see that they have made their beds but if they are willing to remake their beds then we should be willing to help them. And ultimatley our hope and prayer is that they have a new bed which consists of a new job, a roof over head, consistant food on the table, and responsibilities in their lives that they are handling. We hope and pray that you will join us in these efforts.
